Outpainting is the AI version of the extend-canvas gesture in Photoshop — only instead of leaving the new space blank, the model fills it with content that continues the original image seamlessly. Sky that extends above your landscape, ocean that continues past the right edge, pattern motif that tiles into new territory.

The AI looks at the style, colour palette, lighting, and content of your uploaded image and generates new pixels that match. A beach photo gets more beach and more sea. A fabric motif gets more of the same motif. A portrait gets plausible background added around the subject.

Why you'd use it: widening a vertical phone photo into a landscape aspect ratio for a website banner, giving a tightly-cropped product shot some breathing room for an Instagram post, extending the top of a landscape so you can place a headline over sky, or stretching a pattern design to fit a larger fabric repeat without redrawing motifs.
