What is a step and repeat?

A step and repeat is one design placed again and again at a fixed spacing: the logo wall behind a press event, a branded lining, wrapping paper, a ditsy print. The layout decides how it reads. A grid lines everything up; a brick shifts every other row by half a step; a half-drop drops every other column by half, the textile favourite because it breaks up the straight lines; a tossed layout scatters the motif at small random angles and sizes.

The tile this page makes repeats seamlessly, so it can go straight into a print file. Check it in the Seamless Checker and work out how many repeats fit across a bolt with the Repeat Distance calculator.

Common use cases

What people repeat with it

A step and repeat banner

Set the sheet to the banner size, pick a grid or brick layout with generous spacing, and download one file the print shop can output directly.

A branded fabric or lining

Half-drop the logo at a small size for a jacket lining or a tote, then send the seamless tile to a digital fabric printer.

A ditsy print from one motif

Tossed layout, a wide random turn and a few shuffles turn a single flower into an all-over scatter that still repeats cleanly.

Wrapping paper and packaging

Brick or half-drop with a mirror on alternate rows gives packaging a rhythm without making the repeat obvious.

Wallpaper and backgrounds

A transparent background drops the pattern over any colour; a coloured one gives a finished tile for wallpaper or a website.

Merch mock-ups

Make the all-over print here, then place it on garments in the studio's mockups to show a client before anything is printed.

How it works

Four steps, no signup

01
1

Upload your motif

A logo, icon or motif as PNG, JPG or WEBP. A PNG with a transparent background works best, so only the motif repeats.

02
2

Choose the layout

Grid, brick (every other row shifted by half), half-drop (every other column dropped by half) or tossed, where each motif gets its own small turn and size so the repeat looks scattered.

03
3

Set the size and spacing

Motif width and the gap between motifs in cm or inches, a rotation, and optionally a mirror on alternate rows. The preview shows the repeat at once.

04
4

Download the tile or a full sheet

The seamless tile at 300 DPI for your print file, or a full sheet at the size you print, for example a 2.4 m banner or a run of 145 cm fabric.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Q.What is a step and repeat?
A step and repeat is one design placed again and again at a fixed spacing: a logo wall behind a press event, a branded fabric, wrapping paper. Each copy is a step to the side or down from the last, which is where the name comes from.
Q.What is the difference between grid, brick and half-drop?
In a grid every motif lines up in rows and columns. A brick layout shifts every other row by half a step, like bricks in a wall. A half-drop drops every other column by half a step, the most common layout for textiles because it hides the straight lines a grid makes.
Q.What does tossed mean?
A tossed (or scattered) layout places motifs so they look randomly strewn, each with a slightly different angle and size, as in a ditsy floral. Here a tossed tile holds nine motifs, and Shuffle gives a new arrangement. The tile still repeats seamlessly.
Q.Is the tile seamless?
Yes. Every motif that crosses an edge of the tile is also drawn on the opposite edge, so the tile repeats with no visible join, whichever layout you choose.
Q.What resolution are the downloads?
The tile downloads at 300 DPI at the size you set. A full sheet also downloads at 300 DPI unless it is too large for your device to draw in one go (iPhone and iPad allow at most 4096 pixels a side); then it keeps its printed size at the highest DPI that fits, and the page says so.
Q.Can I use several different motifs?
This page repeats one motif. Motif Composer in Texloom Studio arranges several motifs on one tile, with a free account.
Q.Can I use it for a banner or a press wall?
Yes. Set the sheet size to the banner, for example 240 × 240 cm, and download the full sheet. Large sheets on phones and tablets come out at a lower DPI, so a desktop gives the sharpest result for big banners.
Q.Do I need an account?
No. Without an account, downloads count toward a daily allowance; a free account removes it.
