Why textile units are confusing, and how this helps

The textile trade quotes the same thing in several systems. A mill in Europe sells fabric by grams per square metre; a US buyer asks for ounces per square yard; a cutting room thinks in weight per running yard of a given width. Yarn is worse: filament yarns are sold in denier or dtex, spun cotton in Ne, wool and blends in Nm, and the direct and indirect counts run in opposite directions.

This converter keeps every figure tied to an exact definition and shows the working, so a number on a spec sheet can be checked rather than trusted. When you know the fabric, take it into our Fabric Yield calculator to work out how much a run needs, or the Repeat Distance calculator to plan the print across the width.

Common use cases

What people convert with it

Quote a fabric to a US buyer

Your mill lists a jersey at 180 GSM; the buyer's tech pack asks for oz/yd². Convert, copy the figure into the quote, and add the weight per running yard at the roll width.

Compare yarn offers in different counts

One spinner quotes Ne 40, another 15 tex, a filament supplier 150 denier. Put them in one unit to see which is finer before you ask for samples.

Read a sheeting spec

Bed linen is sold on thread count, woven fabric is specified in ends and picks per cm. Enter the construction and get the per-inch figures and the thread count together.

Check a supplier's weight per metre

A price per kilo only becomes a price per metre once you know the weight of a running metre at the real width. Enter GSM and width to get it.

Convert lengths on an order

Orders arrive in yards, the mill invoices in metres, the print file is set up in centimetres. Convert once with exact factors instead of rounding at each step.

Teach the count systems

Every result shows its formula, which makes the direct and indirect counts easy to explain to a new designer or merchandiser.

Four steps, no signup

01
1

Pick what to convert

Fabric weight, yarn count, thread density or length. Each tab holds the units the textile trade actually uses for that measurement.

02
2

Enter the value and its unit

Type the number you have, for example 30 Ne, 150 denier or 200 g/m², and choose the unit it is in. For fabric weight, add the fabric width to get the weight of a running metre or yard.

03
3

Read every other unit

The other units update as you type, with the formula shown underneath, so you can check the working rather than trust a number.

04
4

Copy the value you need

Copy any result with one click and paste it into a spec sheet, a quote or a message to the mill.

Why Texloom

Built for textile numbers

The units the trade actually quotes in, with the working shown.

Exact definitions

1 yd = 0.9144 m, 1 in = 2.54 cm, 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg, 1 oz = 28.349523125 g. Rounded only for display.

Both kinds of yarn count

Direct (tex, dtex, denier) and indirect (Nm, Ne), side by side, with which way each one runs.

Formula under every result

Check the working instead of trusting a number on a spec sheet.

One-click copy

Copy any value, unit included, straight into a quote or tech pack.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Q.How do I convert GSM to oz per square yard?
Divide by 33.906. One ounce per square yard is 28.3495 g spread over 0.8361 m², which is 33.906 g/m². So a 200 GSM cotton is 5.90 oz/yd², and a 6 oz/yd² denim is 203 GSM.
Q.What is the difference between oz per square yard and oz per linear yard?
Ounces per square yard describe the fabric itself. Ounces per linear (running) yard describe one yard cut off the roll, so they depend on the fabric width: a 150 cm wide, 200 GSM fabric weighs 5.90 oz/yd² but 9.68 oz per running yard. Enter the width to see both.
Q.What are tex, dtex and denier?
All three are direct counts: the weight of a fixed length of yarn, so a higher number is a heavier, thicker yarn. Tex is grams per 1000 m, decitex (dtex) is grams per 10 000 m, and denier is grams per 9000 m. Filament yarns are usually quoted in denier or dtex.
Q.What is Ne, the English cotton count?
Ne is the number of 840-yard hanks that weigh one pound. It is an indirect count, so a higher number is a finer yarn. Ne 30 is 19.7 tex; to convert, tex = 590.54 ÷ Ne.
Q.How does Nm relate to Ne?
Nm, the metric count, is the number of kilometres of yarn in one kilogram (tex = 1000 ÷ Nm). Both are indirect counts. Ne 1 equals Nm 1.693, so Ne 30 is about Nm 50.8.
Q.What is thread count?
Thread count is the number of warp ends plus weft picks in one square inch of woven fabric. A sheeting with 100 ends and 80 picks per inch has a thread count of 180. Enter ends and picks per inch or per cm and the converter shows both.
Q.Are the conversions exact?
They use the exact definitions: 1 yard = 0.9144 m, 1 inch = 2.54 cm, 1 pound = 0.45359237 kg and 1 ounce = 28.349523125 g. Results are rounded only for display, to two decimals.
Q.Do I need an account?
No. The converter needs no signup and has no daily limit. Texloom Studio, with an account, adds the design and production tools around it.
