Why aspect ratio matters more than resolution

Every platform has a preferred aspect ratio that controls how your image is displayed and ranked. Instagram feed is 1:1 or 4:5 — anything wider gets cropped into the feed. Pinterest vertically weights discovery, so 2:3 portrait images get 2–3× more visibility than square ones. Etsy thumbnails are 4:3; uploading a 16:9 product shot means Etsy crops your carefully-composed hero into a strip that loses the subject.

Resolution matters too, but aspect ratio is the first filter a platform applies. Upload 3000×3000 to Pinterest and it reformats to 2:3 anyway — if you crop to 2:3 first, you control what stays and what goes. This tool gives you the control.

For print use cases, pair with our Print Calculator to work out the exact pixel dimensions for a given DPI, then crop to that size here. For format conversion after cropping, use the Format Converter.

Common use cases

What people use the cropper for

Crop a product photo for Instagram and Pinterest in one session

Upload once, cycle through 1:1 for Instagram, then 2:3 for Pinterest, download both. Two clicks instead of re-exporting from Photoshop twice.

Prepare textile swatches for a fabric library

Swatches are always 1:1. Photograph your bolt at an angle, crop to a clean square with the Textile Swatch preset, and upload to your fabric library or client presentation.

Make YouTube thumbnails from horizontal photos

YouTube needs 16:9. Drop your source photo, pick YT preset, drag to center on the subject, download. Beats Canva for a single thumbnail.

Crop a scanned pattern for Etsy listing thumbnails

Etsy wants 4:3 for the primary thumb; other positions have different ratios. Crop to each aspect in turn, upload them in order, and maximise thumbnail legibility.

Size a hang-tag photo for print

Hang tags are usually 3:4 portrait. Use that preset, crop to the tag area, then send to your print shop at the exact dimensions. Pair with the Print Calculator for the right DPI.

Facebook cover and business banner prep

Facebook cover is 16:9, but the display crops the center band. Use the Facebook preset, position the subject in the middle third, and you'll see it rendered correctly on desktop and mobile.

Pick your aspect

Aspect cheat sheet

1:1 Square

Instagram, Swatches, Thumbnails

The most universal ratio. Works everywhere — social, catalogues, avatars. Safe default for e-commerce products.

2:3 Portrait

Pinterest, Magazines

Pinterest algorithmically prefers 2:3 — discovery is 2-3× better than for square. Also the standard for magazine cover print.

9:16 Vertical

Stories, Reels, TikTok

Full-screen mobile. TikTok, Instagram Story, Reels, YouTube Shorts — all use 9:16. Use all of the vertical real estate.

16:9 Widescreen

YouTube, Facebook Cover

Video-first platforms. Use your horizontal space to tell a story that needs landscape composition.

4:3 Classic

Etsy, Shopify

The 'photo' aspect before widescreen. E-commerce listings often default to 4:3 because it shows more product without scrolling.

3:4 Portrait

Hang tags, Portraits

Taller than it is wide — fashion portraits, hang tags, look-book covers. The ratio the human body naturally fills.

How it works

Four steps, no signup

01
1

Upload your image

Drop a JPG, PNG, or WEBP up to 10 MB — a product photo, portrait, design mockup, or textile swatch.

02
2

Pick an aspect ratio preset

One-tap presets for Instagram post (1:1), story (9:16), Pinterest (2:3), Etsy thumbnail (4:3), Facebook cover (16:9), textile swatch (1:1), hang tag (3:4), plus free-form.

03
3

Drag to reposition the crop frame

The crop frame auto-fits at the maximum size for your aspect. Drag it anywhere on the image to reposition, or use the zoom slider to include more or less of the image.

04
4

Download the cropped PNG

Export a lossless PNG at the exact pixel dimensions of your crop — no quality loss. Works for any downstream use: social, catalogues, product listings, print.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Q.Why would I use this instead of my phone's built-in cropper?
Your phone can crop for social apps but doesn't know textile swatch ratios, Pinterest's preferred 2:3, Etsy's 4:3 thumbnail, or hang-tag 3:4. This tool has industry-specific presets alongside the social ones, plus pixel-exact output for print workflows where phone-gallery JPG compression matters.
Q.Does cropping lose quality?
No — we export lossless PNG. Cropping only removes pixels outside the selected region; the pixels inside are copied byte-for-byte. The downloaded file is pixel-perfect compared to the original, just smaller.
Q.What file sizes are supported?
Input: JPG, PNG, WEBP up to 10 MB. Output: lossless PNG at the exact pixel dimensions of your crop. For very large crop outputs (over 2000 px on a side) the browser may take a few seconds to encode — still faster than uploading to a server.
Q.Will the cropper work on my phone?
Yes. Drag works with touch, aspect presets one-tap, zoom via pinch — designed mobile-first. File upload works from camera roll or file picker like any other tool on the site.
Q.Can I crop to exact pixel dimensions?
Yes — select 'Custom' aspect, then the output will match the frame you draw. For exact pixel outputs, drag the frame to the approximate size, then the output panel shows the exact pixel count. Pair with our Print Calculator to work out the correct crop pixels for a given print size.
Q.Is my image private?
Yes. The image never leaves your device. Cropping is a pure Canvas 2D operation — nothing is uploaded, stored, or logged. Close the tab and the file is gone.
Q.Can I use the cropped images commercially?
Yes. You retain full ownership of the source and the output. No watermarks, no usage restrictions, no royalty claims. Use for any commercial purpose.
Q.Why are the aspect presets named this way?
Each preset targets a specific platform's preferred upload ratio, which changes occasionally. IG post 1:1, IG/TikTok story 9:16, Pinterest 2:3, YouTube thumbnail 16:9, Facebook cover 16:9, Etsy product 4:3. If a platform updates their spec, we update the preset name — the math doesn't change.
