Choosing the Right References
Extraction is only as good as what you feed it. A dark, compressed phone screenshot produces muddy clusters. A clean, well-lit, high-resolution reference produces distinct, usable swatches.
- Use high-resolution images with even lighting and real contrast.
- Avoid heavily filtered social-media images; the filter is not your color story.
- Pull from several references, not one, so the palette reflects the whole board rather than a single photo.
- Crop out anything that distracts, like a bright logo or a person, before extracting.

Run each reference through extraction and collect the swatches into one working set. You will have too many. Now refine.

Extraction gives you hex, which is an sRGB screen color. Fabric does not live in sRGB. Before you hand a palette to a mill, convert each hex to its nearest Pantone TCX reference. TCX (Textile Cotton eXtended) is dyed on cotton, so it reflects how the color actually reads on fabric rather than on a backlit monitor.
- Convert each swatch to its nearest TCX code as a starting reference, not a final answer.
- Expect a slight softening: sRGB is wider than dyed cotton can reproduce.
- Confirm against a physical swatch before committing to a dye lot.
