Why favicons still matter — and why every size

The 16×16 favicon has been standard since 1999. It still shows up in every browser tab, bookmark bar, history list, and search-result card. When users have 40 tabs open, your favicon is often the only way they find yours again. Shipping a low-quality or missing favicon is a small, fixable UX loss that adds up over time.

Modern iOS, Android, Windows, and progressive-web-app workflows add another six or seven required sizes on top. Every surface downscales a high-resolution source if you don't provide an exact match — and the downscale is often ugly at small sizes. Shipping every size keeps every surface sharp.

If your source icon is an SVG, pair with our SVG Optimizer first to ensure the markup is lean. For non-square sources, run the Image Cropper with a 1:1 aspect before generating favicons.

Common use cases

What people use this for

New website launch

You're launching a site and need favicons in the public folder before the first deploy. Upload the logo, download the ZIP, drop all files into public/, paste the HTML snippet. Five minutes, done.

Progressive Web App setup

PWAs need a proper site.webmanifest and 192/512 icons. This tool generates both. Paste the manifest into your repo, link it in <head>, your app is installable.

Rebrand / logo refresh

New brand mark? Run it through here, download the ZIP, replace existing favicons in your public/, deploy. Cache-busting by URL-versioning the icons in HTML if needed.

Client deliverable — brand asset bundle

Designer handing over a brand kit? Include the favicon ZIP alongside the logos and guidelines. Clients love not having to figure out favicon sizes themselves.

iOS home-screen icon for a web app

iOS expects 180×180 apple-touch-icon.png. Users save your web app to home screen and the icon shows up. Use Apple-white background for the cleanest look under iOS's rounded-corner mask.

Check favicon legibility at 16x16

Preview surfaces every size side-by-side so you can spot when your design is too complex for 16×16. Simplify if needed — a simpler, bolder favicon reads clearly; a detailed one becomes mud.

How it works

Four steps, no signup

01
1

Upload your icon or logo

Drop a JPG, PNG, or SVG up to 10 MB. Square images work best — the tool auto-pads non-square images with your chosen background color so nothing gets cropped.

02
2

Pick background and padding

Transparent (keeps PNG transparency), solid color (useful for logos that need a branded background), or Apple-style white (required for iOS home-screen icons). Add 0-20% padding around the mark.

03
3

Preview at every size

See how your favicon reads at 16×16 (browser tab), 32×32 (retina tab), 48×48 (Windows), 180×180 (iOS home), 192×192 and 512×512 (Android / PWA). Spot legibility issues at small sizes before you ship.

04
4

Download the ZIP bundle

One click gives you a ZIP with every PNG size, a ready-to-use site.webmanifest, and a code snippet you can paste into your HTML <head>. Drop into your project's public folder and you're done.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Q.Why do I need so many icon sizes?
Every browser, OS, and device class requests a different icon. A browser tab uses 16×16 or 32×32. iOS home-screen uses 180×180 at 3x for retina. Android uses 192×192 and 512×512. Windows tiles use 150×150. If you ship only a single 512×512 PNG, browsers downscale to 16×16 and your brand looks muddy in the tab. Shipping all sizes keeps every surface sharp.
Q.What file formats does it output?
PNG for every size. Plus a site.webmanifest JSON file with the Android/Chrome icon references and a ready-to-paste HTML snippet for the <head> section. ICO format (for very old browsers) isn't included — modern browsers (2015+) all prefer PNG and the IE-era ICO is effectively obsolete.
Q.Can I upload an SVG?
Yes — SVG renders crisper at every size than a raster source, so it's the best input if you have one. The tool rasterises the SVG to each target size. If your SVG has fine detail that breaks at 16×16, consider simplifying for the favicon use (pair with our SVG Optimizer).
Q.What background color should I pick?
If your logo has solid edges that work on any color, use transparent. If your logo has fine edges that blend into backgrounds (common with thin-stroke marks), use a solid background matching your brand color. Apple-style white is specifically for iOS home screens — iOS adds its own rounded-corner mask, so a white background gives the cleanest look there.
Q.Why does my favicon look blurry?
Usually because the source image has too much detail. A 16×16 favicon has 256 pixels to work with — that's less than a single character of text. Bold shapes, 2-3 colors maximum, and clear high-contrast edges survive. Photographic or fine-detail images don't scale down well. If yours looks blurry, simplify the source.
Q.Is my image private?
Yes. All rendering runs in your browser. Nothing uploads. Close the tab, your image is gone. Safe for brand work under NDA and unreleased logos.
Q.Do I need to sign up?
No. Every size, the ZIP bundle, the manifest, and the HTML snippet are all free. No account needed.
Q.Can I use the output commercially?
Yes. The generated PNGs, manifest, and code snippet are yours to deploy anywhere. No attribution required. Use on any website, personal or commercial.
