Watermarking matters — here's how to do it right

Every image you post publicly is copyable. A low-effort screen capture takes five seconds; a Photoshop clone-stamp on a corner watermark takes a minute. Watermarking doesn't make reuse impossible — it makes it awkward, traceable, and unambiguous whose work it was originally.

The most effective watermark strategy isn't the loudest one. A small ©-name in the corner is often enough for portfolio shots because the goal is provenance, not protection. For review-stage client deliverables where theft is a real risk, a low-opacity tiled watermark repeated across the whole image is much harder to remove and doesn't ruin the aesthetic when viewed at full size.

Pair with our Format Converter if you need JPG output after watermarking, or the Image Cropper to produce aspect-locked versions for different social platforms.

Common use cases

What people watermark

Portfolio photos for a public website

Photographers posting portfolio shots want traceable attribution without ruining the image. Corner watermark at 40-60% opacity is the sweet spot — visible on inspection, invisible at first glance.

Client review renders (before final approval)

During review cycles, client-facing renders sometimes leak to public before paid work is done. Tiled watermark makes the render obviously a proof, impossible to casually reuse as a finished asset.

Product shots for e-commerce

Etsy, Shopify, and Facebook Marketplace sellers watermark product photos to deter scammers from reposting them on fake listings. Diagonal rotated watermark is harder to clone-stamp out than a flat corner version.

Textile pattern previews for buyers

Showing a print to a potential buyer before the license is signed? Tiled low-opacity watermark makes the pattern usable for mood-boarding but not for production. When the contract is signed, send the clean unwatermarked file.

Art prints on Instagram

Illustrators posting finished work on Instagram watermark to attribute — Instagram strips EXIF and clients often screenshot. A visible signature ensures credit sticks even when the image leaves the platform.

Stock photography style preview

If you sell stock images, preview watermarks are the norm. Large centered tiled watermark with your brand lets buyers see the composition while preventing unpaid use.

How it works

Four steps, no signup

01
1

Upload your image

Drop a JPG, PNG, or WEBP up to 10 MB — a portfolio photo, a product shot, an artwork scan, a design mockup. The watermark is composited directly on top of your source image.

02
2

Choose text or logo watermark

Type your watermark text (© Studio, copyright line, client name) or upload a transparent PNG logo. Combine both for a belt-and-braces watermark that survives cropping.

03
3

Position, rotate, fade

Pick a 9-point position (corners, edges, center), adjust opacity, rotate the watermark up to 45°, tile it across the whole image for maximum theft-deterrence, or keep it to a single corner.

04
4

Download the watermarked PNG

Export a lossless PNG with the watermark baked in. Ready to post to your portfolio, send to a client for review, or share on social without risking reuse. No signup.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Q.Why should I watermark my images before posting online?
Once an image is on the internet, it can be scraped, screenshot, and re-posted without attribution. A visible watermark makes the provenance obvious and makes re-use awkward for anyone trying to claim the work. Photographers, textile designers, and illustrators watermark portfolio shots, review-only deliverables, and social previews as standard practice.
Q.What makes a good watermark?
Four things. (1) Legible — big enough to read at the size you're posting. (2) Transparent — usually 30-60% opacity so it doesn't ruin the image. (3) Positioned where it can't be cropped away — corners get cropped in thumbnails, so a diagonal tiled watermark is harder to remove. (4) Your real brand — just a © symbol proves little; your actual name or logo carries meaning.
Q.Can this watermark be removed?
A determined attacker with Photoshop can remove any single-corner watermark in minutes. A tiled watermark (especially at low opacity across the whole image) is much harder because every spot needs to be cleaned. Use tiled mode for preview / review-stage images; corner mode is fine for portfolio shots where the aesthetic matters more than maximum deterrence.
Q.What's the file-type limitation?
Input: JPG, PNG, WEBP up to 10 MB. Output: always lossless PNG at the source dimensions. If you need JPG or WEBP output, pipe through our Format Converter afterwards.
Q.Can I use a transparent PNG as the watermark?
Yes — any PNG with transparency uploads cleanly and composites with the transparency preserved. Branded logos with soft-drop shadows, intricate signatures, or patterned brand marks all work as long as they're PNG-transparent.
Q.Is my image private?
Yes. The watermark compositing runs entirely in your browser. Nothing uploads. Safe for unreleased brand work, NDA images, or private photo archives.
Q.Can I use this for commercial work?
Yes. The output is yours. No watermarks from us (ironic, we know), no attribution requirement, no usage restrictions. Watermark client deliverables, portfolio pieces, and product photography.
Q.How does this compare to Photoshop's watermark automation?
Photoshop's Actions + Batch can watermark 500 images in sequence — this tool handles one image at a time. Great for one-off images (portfolio, reviews, social posts); for huge batch workflows Photoshop still wins. For scenarios where you'd paste-sign an image once then move on, this tool is faster than launching Photoshop.
